The other interpretation of waking replay is that the rats are daydreaming. In Thinking Without Language, Lohmar proposes that in these moments of language-less replay, rats are mentally visualizing different spaces and thus either mind wandering or daydreaming (depending on how one defines these terms).41 For quite some time now, neuroscientists and philosophers have been busy unpacking the behavioral, neural, and phenomenological overlaps between dreams, daydreams, and mind wanderings, and the growing consensus is that these states are more similar to one another than previously supposed.42 It would not be surprising if a neurocognitive mechanism such as hippocampal replay were implicated in all of them. If so, some of the differences between these phenomena could be partly explained by the metabolic state of the organism at the time this mechanism is activated. When hippocampal replay occurs during sleep, rats dream. When it occurs during the waking state, they either mind wander or daydream. Understood in this way, hippocampal replay is yet another illustration of how imagination brings disparate mental states under the same roof.
